Is this the answer to clean drinking water?

An estimated 663 million people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water, yet finding an efficient way to disinfect the vital liquid has proved difficult. However, researchers have designed a new device which could solve this issue, using a resource readily available in most climates. The disinfection device is powered by the sun, and can rapidly kill bacteria to deliver safe drinking water.

The device has been designed by researchers from the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University in California, who wanted to create a more efficient water purification system.

While other solar disinfection devices do exist, these rely on ultraviolet light, which represents only four per cent of the total solar energy.

This leads to a very slow treatment speed of up to 48 hours, limiting the amount of water people can disinfect.

To counteract this issue, the researchers developed new materials that can harvest visible light – which represents around 50 per cent of solar energy – and speed up solarch.

The device is made from extremely thin films of molybdenum disulphide – an inorganic compound made up of the elements molybdenum and sulphur.

Dr Chong Liu, lead author of the study, said: ‘Our device looks like a little rectangle of black glass.

‘We just dropped it into the water and put everything under the sun, and the sun did all the work.’

In their paper, published in Nature Nanotechnology, sunlight falling on the device killed more than 99.999 per cent of bacteria in just 20 minutes, leaving behind clean drinking water.

The device – which is around half the thickness of a postage stamp – has a striped surface made up of thin lines of molybdenum disulphide film, which the researchers call ‘nanoflakes’.

Molybdenum disulphide is usually used as an industrial lubricant, but its properties change depending on how many layers are in the material.

In this case, the film is only a few layers thick, which makes the material become a photocatalyst – a substance that speeds up reactions when exposed to light.

Additionally, the researchers added a thin layer of copper to the film, which also acts as a catalyst to speed up reactions.


The device consists of thin layers of molybdenum disulphide arranged like walls on a glass surface and topped with a thin layer of copper. Light falling on the walls triggers formation of hydrogen peroxide and other ‘reactive oxygen species’ that kill bacteria

This allowed the material to use sunlight to trigger specific reactions that produce ‘reactive oxygen species’ like hydrogen peroxide, which kill bacteria in the surrounding water.

Molybdenum disulfide is cheap and easy to make – an important consideration when making devices for widespread use in developing countries.

However the method is not a fix-all, as it only removes bacteria from water, and not other harmful chemicals.

Additionally it has only been tested on three strains of bacteria, and could be susceptible to other microbes, such as viruses.

However, it has huge potential, and Dr Liu added: ‘It’s very exciting to see that by just designing a material you can achieve a good performance.

Team cracks mystery of London’s ‘killer fog’

In 1952, a killer fog containing pollutants covered London for five days, causing breathing problems and killing thousands of residents. The exact cause and nature of the fog has remained mostly unknown for decades, but scientists now believe the mystery has been solved.

In December of 1952, the fog enveloped all of London and residents at first gave it little notice because it appeared to be no different from the familiar natural fogs that have swept over Great Britain for thousands of years.

But over the next few days, conditions deteriorated, and the sky became dark. Visibility was reduced to only three feet in many parts of the city, all transportation shut down, and tens of thousands of people had trouble breathing. By the time the fog lifted on December 9, at least 4,000 people had died and more than 150,000 had been hospitalized. Thousands of animals in the area also died.

Recent British studies now say that the death count was likely far higher—more than 12,000 people of all ages died from the killer fog. It has long been known that many of those deaths were likely caused by emissions from coal burning, but the exact chemical processes that led to the deadly mix of fog and pollution have not been fully understood over the past 60 years.

The 1952 killer fog led to the passage of the Clean Air Act in 1956 by the British Parliament and is still considered the worst air pollution event in the European history.

Air pollution causes 467,000 premature deaths a year in Europe so you need air purifier

Air pollution is causing around 467,000 premature deaths in Europe every year, the European Environment Agency (EEA) has warned.

People in urban areas are especially at risk, with around 85% exposed to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at levels deemed harmful by the World Health Organization (WHO).

These particles are too small to see or smell, but have a devastating impact.

PM2.5 can cause or aggravate heart disease, asthma and lung cancer.

How big is the problem?

It’s pretty bad. Within the European Union (EU), more than 430,000 people died prematurely due to PM2.5 in 2013, the most recent year with figures available.

According to the EEA’s Air quality in Europe – 2016 report, the toxic gas nitrogen dioxide (NO2) – released by vehicles and central heating boilers – has an impact equivalent to 71,000 premature deaths a year.

Ground-level ozone (O3) is also killing people – an estimated 17,000 annually in the EU.

Unlike the protective ozone layer in the stratosphere, ground-level ozone is harmful, formed when emissions like NO2 react with other pollutants and “cook” in heat or sunlight.

Concern that the thick smog lingering over North China may pose serious health threats has boosted sales of air cleaning products across the nation.

Demand for humidifiers, air purifiers, masks and related items has skyrocketed since November, and merchants are expecting it to keep growing this month.

“The growth demonstrably outpaced that of other home appliances, and the rise is largely attributable to the recent air pollution,” Zhao said.

Though the gloomy weather is spread over northern China, especially Beijing, “We see in general an equal surge in demand in different parts of the country, and we believe the numbers will continue to rise until the end of the year,” she said.

Chang Zhonghua, a lab examiner at a pharmaceutical factory in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning province, said she had to wear a mask every day because of the poor air quality.

“I also spread bamboo charcoal bags around my home and in my car to purify the air. I don’t know whether this actually helps, or is simply a psychological comfort,” she said.

An HYG salesman said that’s three times the number sold last month and a 20 percent year-on-year increase. He added that 60 percent of the orders were delivered to Beijing and neighboring Hebei province.

“People snapped up air cleaning products because of the bad weather, and sales in one outlet in Beijing even doubled compared with this period last year,” Suning said in an e-mail.

Similarly, Gome Electrical Appliances, a major rival of Suning, saw air purifier and humidifier sales grow by 30 percent, said He Yangqing, Gome’s public relations director.

Tan Mingqi, a physician and chief of the respiratory department at Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University in Shenyang, said common masks and air purifiers help prevent users from inhaling dust. But it’s equally important to clean them, he said.

China uses a standard of particulate matter smaller than 10 micrometers (PM10) to measure air quality, but the public has urged authorities to adopt the stricter PM2.5 standard, which measures finer matter that is considered more hazardous to health because it can go deeper into the lungs.

This weekend, I finally relented and bought a face mask designed to protect against pollution particles. I did it for mom. But I also did it because Delhi’s air has reached levels of toxicity that are putting my asthmatic lungs — really anyone’s lungs — in serious danger.

When I arrived at Nirvana Being, a small shop in the city’s upscale Khan Market that sells anti-pollution products, there were at least 15 people in line to buy face masks. By the time I made my purchase, there were around 20 more.

It’s a scene playing out all over the city — in pharmacies, electronics stores and anywhere else that sells masks and air filters that might provide relief.

Already notorious because of its toxic air, pollution in Delhi has skyrocketed over the past week. Measurements of dangerous particles taken at the U.S. Embassy in Delhi put the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) at 999 on Monday, off the standard chart, which finishes at the “hazardous” level of 500.

Most multinational companies too have issued guidelines with incentives to get their employees to install purifiers at homes as well.

So how effective are air purifiers in combating these levels of pollution? One can only guess as so far no government or independent scientific institution has done any study of their impact. Vivek Chattopadhyay of Delhi-based NGO Centre for Science and Environment points out that the air purifiers’ appeal is largely based on faith and says, “The devices perform at best like an air conditioner that traps the air within the room and circulates that same air.”

Chattopadhyay rubbishes the Delhi government’s claims of installing air purifier systems on traffic signals as “useless”, saying the possibility of such devices working in open spaces is even less. And yet, for people living in polluted cities such as Delhi and Patna, the purifiers bring the only believable promise of respite from the deadly pollution, however temporary and limited. No wonder more and more of them are shelling out the bucks, hoping for that sliver of chance to prevent long-term health damage.

Demand for air purifier in Delhi-NCR perks up by 50% post Diwali: Assocham survey

MANGALURU: Air purifier market in India has seen a spike of about 50% in its demand in wake of poor air quality in Delhi-NCR post-Diwali, noted a quick ASSOCHAM survey.
The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) conducted a survey to gauge the hike in demand for air purifying kits across 200 electronic and general stores in Delhi-NCR in past four days.

“There has been an explosion in demand for air purifiers which has jumped nearly 50 per cent as air quality in and around Delhi has become hazardous post-Diwali festival,” said majority of electronic and general stores’ representatives selling such items.

“The demand for air purifier in India has been growing rapidly across metros in India but as the smog problem became severe in Delhi after Diwali the demand for such kits has become really huge and is likely to grow steadily,” said many of the store managers.

However, many of these said that people looking to install air purifiers in their homes get disappointed owing to high costs and term it more of a luxury product. As such most of such customers are only enquiring and their number is growing by the day.

The demand is more from offices, industrial and commercial establishments, said many of these.

As per market experts, the air purifier market in India is still in nascent stage and is estimated at about Rs 250 crore but has been growing by leaps and bounds since past one year owing to rising awareness about impact of air pollution.
